Undergraduate Research Outline

Starting from my sophomore year, I joined Professor Teng, Lee-Jene's group on clinical bacteriology.
After a short period of learning under a graduate student to familiarize the basic operations in the lab and preparation of common reagents and equipment, I submitted an undergraduate research proposal to the National Science Council. The proposal was on the effect of farnesol, a sesquiterpene, on the lipase and protease activity of Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis from clinical isolation.
In this research, we have found that different strains of clinical isolates present different protease and lipase activity. Farnesol has an inhibitory effect on all lipase activity but only on some of the protease activity. According to the theory of farnesol inhibition, it is reasonable that farnesol can only inhibit the serine protease.
The study was trying to investigate the potential of alternative antimicrobial therapy to prevent the direct bactericidal mutagenesis problem that may arise through antibiotic therapy. But I could only complete the in vitro assay.
The study was awarded the research creativity award a year later and the Theodore scholarship.
After this i was also advised by Dr. Chen back when she was a graduate student, to assist on the identification the pathogenicity island and fusidic acid resistance gene using PCR until i graduate from the CLSMB.
